Hand taps are often used on the drill press as an alignment tool. If the the hole was drilled in the drill press then you can lock down all movement and just exchange the drill for a tapping center liek the one shown in the previous page. this will insure that you are perfectly aligned.

DO NOT TRY TO TAP WITH SPINDLE TURNING!!!

In this above video, the guide is held in the drill chuck and positioned onto the tap or the T-handle. The intent is to keep tension on the tool so that it will not sway back and forth while rotating the tap. The drill press is used for alignment only. The tap will have a dimple in the center at end to use as a guide.
