Chip breaker
A cutting tool design
ed to break the chip as the material is cut from the work piece. Without a chip breaker continuous curled chips called "stringers" may develop causing a safety or a finish problem. The chip breaker is usually a standard tool with a trough formed just behind the cutting edge. Chip breaking tools are typically not as strong and long lasting as tools without this trough.
