| The two most common optical comparator styles are shown in the this image.
On the left is the horizontal style that shines a beam of light horizontal. (see the previous page for an explanation of how it works). This style is, by far, the most common optical comparator found in machine shops.
To the right of it is the vertical style which shines a beam of light vertically through a piece of glass to a mirror on the very bottom which bounces the light back up to the screen. This type of comparator is popular for small parts of even thickness because they can be laid on the glass as gravity holds them in place.
