Backlash refers to the play between the lead screw and the nut that is apparent on any axis of a manual machine. See the animation below.

Backlash is an unavoidable result of machine wear and the machinist should always be aware that it exists. Backlash can cause errors in reading on the micrometer dial of the longitudinal slide and the cross slide .
