The machinist can not assume that surfaces are perpendicular or parallel simply because of the apparent shape of the stock. It may appear that surfaces are square and parallel but close inspection often reveals something completely different. See the animation on the right.
The machinist should check the stock for squareness before setting up. A machinist square can be used to check for perpendicularity and a pair of micrometers can be used to check parallelism.
