The most important purpose of the grinding machine is external, internal processing of parts, grinding of cylindrical, flat type surfaces at different angles, the task of the equipment is to make the surface of the workpiece to be processed perfectly flat and smooth. Workpiece machining is carried out in several stages – chamfering, overhang removal, rounding, calibration, and the final touch – full-fledged surface leveling. Abrasive material is used as a cutting tool.

There are these types of grinding machines:

  • Circular grinding machines – with their help it is possible to grind parts that have the shape of a cylinder. The device works due to the working headstock and chuck, in which the workpiece is clamped.
  • Intra-grinding machines – work with workpieces of different shapes (cylindrical, cone and others).
  • Centerless grinding types of equipment – the workpiece is placed between the grinding wheel and the drive wheel. During operation, the workpiece is placed on the knife, fixed with the drive wheel and moves in longitudinal direction.
  • Flat grinding machines – the equipment makes the surface of the flat type perfectly flat and smooth. The parts are machined on a rectangular worktable.
  • Longitudinal-grinding type of tool – with their help you can grind long parts, the principle of operation resembles the work of flat grinding units.
  • Roughing-grinding equipment – designed to prepare the metal for the next stage of processing, removes the defective layer of material. If the processed parts have small dimensions, a special unit equipped with an electric grinder with two circles is used for their processing.
  • Oscillation-spindle – in such machines, the abrasive material moves not only along the workpiece, but also performs a reciprocating motion, which gives the best frequency when processing the ends.
  • Profile grinding – with this type, curved surfaces of any shape can be easily machined. Defects are removed after several runs: the first time the tool removes the allowance, moving along the trajectory, the second run involves the use of a grinding wheel, whose shape corresponds to the shape of the workpiece.
  • Double-sided machines – mainly used for rough alignment of the ends of the workpiece.

In the grinding industry, there may also be CNC machines, that is, those equipped with numerical control. It is easier and faster to machine many similar parts on such machines.

They are the most convenient sanding machines because they are lightweight and easy to carry, thanks to their handy dimensions. They can be installed anywhere – on a table, floor, other flat and well-stable surface.

Grinding machines of transportable type are divided into:

devices of the sharpening type;
disk type tools;
machines with tape abrasive element.

The first type – sharpening and grinding machines, are used for sharpening cutting objects, such as knives, scissors, drills. Also this type of equipment is used for peeling old paint from the surface, cleaning the surface.

As an abrasive element in plate tools a rotating disk is used, in belt types of equipment – an abrasive element (moving belt). There are also machines that have two types of abrasive element – disc and belt.

An electric jigsaw can also be used as a small portable sanding machine. It is enough to paste the saw blade into a wooden bar, on which the abrasive material should be glued beforehand. This device will be able to help in the sanding process, not only in hard-to-reach places, but also where delicate sanding is needed.

Sharpening and grinding machines are electrically powered devices, the main purpose of which is sharpening and finishing of locksmith’s and carpenter’s tools, metal parts and products.

Sharpening machines are divided into three main groups:

Small table-type machines, equipped with grinding discs with a diameter of 90-200 mm, are suitable for machining small tools and parts.
Medium floor type machines equipped with grinding discs with a diameter of 200-350 mm are used in factories (sharpening of cutters, knives).
Large machines, equipped with grinding discs with a diameter of 400 mm and more. They are used in industrial enterprises for manual adjusting and sharpening of parts, scraping and deburring works.
The lathes can be additionally equipped with equipment for sharpening drills, belt grinding, dressing of rounded parts. Also extractor for diverting metal chips and dust, for example, grinder ZSV-20. In this case the abrasive-metal dust is stopped in the filter, which allows you to work at the machine without a respirator.

Machine applications
Sharpening and grinding machines are used in many areas of production for a variety of tasks. Due to such versatility, they are widely used both in industrial enterprises and at home.

A single sharpening and grinding machine can be used for grinding, sharpening and deburring tools, parts or products.

The main types of work performed on the sharpening and grinding machines:

sharpening of working tools and tools (knives, cutters, drills, swords);
machining of locksmith and joiner’s tools for various purposes (scissors, chisels, chisels, axes);
can be used as a locksmith tool for processing metal parts and products, grinding, leveling;
Can function as a polishing machine if felt blade is used.

Small and medium-sized lathes will be a useful addition to home workshops, farms, or small businesses. Large machines are indispensable tools in factories and plants engaged in metalworking, mechanical engineering, production of equipment and components.

Machine tool types, main differences
Currently, there are 5 main types of sharpening and grinding equipment.

Circular grinding. Suitable for external machining of tapered and cylindrical products.
Internal grinding. Suitable for internal finishing of conical and cylindrical workpieces.
Surface grinding. Used for grinding flat surfaces.
Centreless grinding. For grinding cylindrical and profile surfaces using the plunge cut method. Used in mass production for finishing of external parts.
Honing. Is used for the finest grinding. Honing removes fine chips up to 0.1 mm in thickness.
